Alva is a mysterious woman whom J’Zhirr has only seen at night. When J’Zhirr sneaks into her house during the day, J’Zhirr discovers why. Alva is a vampire!
In Alva’s journal, she writes about how she was seduced by a vampire called Movarth Piquine and became part of his coven. They plan to take over Morthal and use it as a source of blood and protection. Alva cast a spell on Hroggar so that he would be her protector during the day. Then feeling that Hroggar’s family is becoming a burden, she sends Laelette to get rid of them.
J’Zhirr stole her journal as proof to show Jarl Ravencrone.
Thonnir comes crying in disbelief. Laelette turns out to be his missing wife. Everyone thought she ran off to join the Stormcloaks but now it seems that she has somehow turned into a vampire. Thonnir says that Laelette visited Alva the night she disappeared. However when this one raises the possibility that Alva is the cause of Laelette’s condition, Thonnir is unwilling to believe it. Has Alva charmed all the men in this town?
J’Zhirr finds Helgi’s newly dug grave. There is no answer when this one calls her. Then J’Zhirr remembers the rule of the game is to find Helgi at night.
When J’Zhirr returns in the dark, he finds a vampire standing over Helgi’s grave. J’Zhirr slains the vampire and Helgi tells this one that the vampire Laelette was told to set fire to Helgi’s house. Helgi says Laelette kissed her neck and it got so cold that the fire didn’t even hurt. Although Laelette wanted to take and keep Helgi, her plan did not work as Helgi is all burned up.
When Helgi finishes her story, she says she is tired and is going to sleep for a while.
J’Zhirr finds Hroggar working at the lumber mill and tells him about seeing Helgi’s ghost. All Hroggar says is, “That’s nice.” He does not seem to care and says that he has Alva to take care of now.
J’Zhirr finds Hroggar’s daughter, Helgi, in her burnt house. She does not seem to realize that she has died.
When J’Zhirr asks Helgi about the fire, she tells this one that first it was very hot and there was a lot of smoke. Then it became cold and dark and she is not scared anymore. She asks J’Zhirr to play hide-and-seek with her but he must find her only at night. Before Helgi disappears, she speaks of another one who is also playing the game.
Jarl Ravencrone suggests that J’Zhirr checks the burnt house for clues if he wants to get to the bottom of the mystery behind the fire. This one exits Highmoon Hall and sees a bright aurora over Morthal. Perhaps this is a good omen.
